How to plan an RV trip, from first route to departure

Start with your destination, dates, and a comfortable daily driving pace. Build overnight options around that pace, verify each campsite and road for your rig, book directly, then enter your confirmed stops into your RV navigation app. Wayward Route helps organize the itinerary before you book and drive.

1. Decide how much driving belongs in each day

Choose a pace you can sustain across the whole trip. Driving estimates do not include every fuel stop, meal, outing, traffic delay, or campsite check-in. Leave room for those before choosing an overnight area.

For example, a four-hour driving estimate plus a one-hour lunch and fuel break already takes five hours, before traffic or exploring. If you need to arrive by 4 p.m., count backward from check-in instead of treating four hours as the entire travel day.

In Wayward Route, enter your starting point, destination, dates, rig details, and preferred pace. The free preview shows the route, overnight areas, daily driving, coverage gaps, and a complete first day. No account or card is needed to preview.

2. Turn overnight areas into campsite choices

Wayward Route's overnight catalog focuses on federal campgrounds in the United States. Review gaps before purchasing: an overnight area without a matching campground is a planning problem to resolve, not a reservation.

Check the actual site's permitted vehicle length, arrival rules, hookups, and reservation dates. Unknown limits need confirmation. A long parking pad does not by itself prove your RV is allowed. Read our federal campground checklist before booking.

3. Book directly and keep the confirmations together

Use the campground's booking link to confirm inventory for your dates and make your reservation. Wayward Route does not reserve sites or check live campsite availability.

A purchased plan includes a private booking checklist, revisions to the saved route, companion sharing, and a downloadable PDF. If you replace a campground, review your existing reservation separately; revising the itinerary does not cancel a booking.

4. Prepare the daily drive in your navigation app

Use your confirmed overnight stops as destinations in an RV navigation tool. Wayward Route uses car-route estimates; it does not check bridge clearance, weight limits, or propane restrictions.

Already use RV LIFE Trip Wizard or Roadtrippers? Keep your Wayward Route itinerary open as a reference while you manually enter stops, dates, and your rig profile there. Our navigation handoff guide walks through that process.

5. Review the plan before paying and before leaving

Explore the complete Smokies sample and its PDF to see the format. One trip costs $79 once; annual access costs $129 per year and renews until canceled. Start with the free preview to judge coverage and pace before choosing either.

Before departure, recheck campground notices, road conditions, arrival instructions, and your navigation settings. Keep the PDF available for reference and keep reservation confirmations accessible separately.
